Those gorgeous hot summer days are beginning to roll through Southern California, and we all want to make the most of them, be it indoors or outdoors. We need to keep our cool when the sun starts shining and our body temperature reminds us that we are not designed for long periods of excessive heat, or cold for that matter.
Stay Cool in the Sizzling SoCal Summer Weather
The cooling California Current offshore, enhanced by the upwelling of cold subsurface waters, has a breeze-y influence along California’s coastal belt. For example, average daily highs in San Diego hover around a modest 76°F between July and September (peak summer months), with nighttime lows averaging around 9°F cooler. Moving eastward inland to Death Valley, we see the thermometer average 117°F in the heat of day in July, before cooling off to 88°F overnight.
Sun Protection
This is an advisory for sun worshippers! If you plan to head off for a day in the sun, remember to apply plenty of sunscreen before you leave home. A good quality sunscreen lotion or spray with at least 35 SPF helps prevent harmful ultraviolet rays from damaging your skin and health.
Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is particularly important on hot days. Cold drinks are great, but avoid drinks with a lot of sugar because they can actually dehydrate you. Drink lots of water, and homemade lemonade can be refreshing too. Avoid taking in alcohol while lapping up the sun as that can increase dehydration. Drinking hot black tea with a slice of lemon helps beat the heat, and ice tea just about beats the lot!
The Summer at Home Choice
Of course, another option is to keep cool within the confines of your at-home oasis. This is a great choice if you have an extended outdoor space. Picture the scene as you drift outside through your fabulous frameless sliding glass walls. These beauties keep the cooled air indoors while you step outside to enjoy the summer heat – don’t forget the BBQ and the patio pool or jacuzzi tub if you have them.
If you are at home and want to cool things down without resorting to air conditioners, slide open your frameless glass doors and windows. Turn the fans on, and move as close as you can to them. Better still, fill a bowl with ice and place it in front of a fan. The breeze from your fan will deflect off the ice as it melts, and this will create an enjoyable cooling mist without the high costs of air conditioning.

Cooling Summer Activities
The nearest beach is an obvious first choice for young and old alike, especially when the sun is beating down. A private pool also makes an excellent choice if you prefer to avoid big crowds. Either way, observe safety rules and definitely don’t fall asleep in the sun without adequate protection.
Are you an adventurous person? Apart from swimming, there are a number of water activities you can keep cool with along Southern California’s fabulous coastline. Body surfing, stand-up paddle (SUP) boarding, and kayaking can be leisurely summertime cool activities. Charter a boat for the afternoon and sail into the sunset or do some light fishing. Go for a dive or spend some time snorkeling with the local sea life. These activities are all great ways to keep cool while having fun in the sun at the same time.
Climate Controlled Fun
Your local shopping mall is a good place to shelter from the sun’s heat, and that is because the climate is controlled. Sit back and enjoy a relaxing time at your favorite café or eatery. Movie theaters are good for taking your mind off the hot weather outside. Window shopping is great fun too and is completely free.
Cold foods and salads are great for hot days. Follow up with your favorite ice cream. Move to a shady spot outdoors and consider throwing a picnic – your family will love it and so will you. We hope we have convinced you that there is more to hot summer weather than just cooling off in a pool or sitting all day on the beach. Whether you prefer to beat the heat at home and enjoy the breeze blowing through your frameless sliding glass doors, or go off in search of a cooling outdoor experience, enjoy it! Nowhere comes close to beautiful Southern California in the summertime.
