Integrating Nature Into Your Home Design

Written by Caroline Prince | Jun 6, 2017 7:00:00 PM

The planet is so versatile and has so many beautiful qualities that we can all appreciate, that it’s only natural for some of us to try and emulate that detail in the design of our home.

Beautiful structures of stone and wood, colorful foliage and the natural light and heat that is provided by the sun create a comfortable environment that we are all so familiar with. But, how do you introduce some of these qualities into our homes without it becoming tacky and distracting?

Welcome the Outside In™

Stone and Brickwork

Most people don’t consider brick and stonework to “natural elements” per se. Obviously, there are no bricks in nature, and stones in their natural setting are uncut, but adding them to your home’s interior or exterior works wonders for your home’s aesthetic. Even if your budget is on the lower end, you can still incorporate these ideas into your home on a smaller scale. Fill a vase with some small stones and place it on your coffee table, or use it as a centerpiece! Your home is only as limited as your creativity.

Introducing Waterworks to Your Home

Clearly, water is a little bit more difficult to incorporate into your home design, but it can definitely be done. If you live on a nice piece of property, you can add some incredible features that will envelop your home with a more natural and outdoorsy vibe. If you’re feeling really ambitious, there are tons of DIY options that you can find online.

Wooden Furniture & Accents

Excess wooden furniture and additional feature may not always fit into the design of your home, but in small doses, it can do a lot to make your design space appear more natural. Wooden accent walls have become extremely popular amongst homeowners and home designers as of recently. Wooden accent walls add a little bit more color and texture to a room without being so overwhelming and depending on how the wood is treated and finished, you can use the wall to enhance other natural features around the room. Wood is such a versatile component and can be used nearly anywhere in the home while still looking pleasing to the eye.

Floral Arrangements & Potted Plants

To most of you, this is probably the most obvious way to add some of nature’s beautiful elements to your design space. Potted plants and flowers are colorful and have the added benefit of recycling fresh air inside of your home. One of the best things about potted plants and flowers is that regardless of color and size, most of them can be incorporated into any room and still look great. Not to mention, houseplants have a number of health benefits and are beneficial to your mental health!

Use Natural Sunlight

In some cases, such as in smaller homes and apartments with limited windows, it may be a little difficult to fill your home or room with natural sunlight. However, if you have the luxury of having a home with big window fixtures, you should definitely be taking advantage. Natural light in your home will accentuate certain features that can’t be achieved with artificial lights. Sunlight will make the colors in your home pop; whites will appear brighter and other colors will appear more vibrant.

If you live in a small space with smaller windows, consider strategically placing mirrors around your home. Mirrors reflect sunlight, making your home a little brighter and will make your space look a little bit bigger to the naked eye.

There are many ways to integrate nature into your home design, on a small or large scale. The most important thing to consider is the expected result for you and your family, according to your lifestyle.
